They’re functioning, showing up, getting things done, even while something underneath isn’t working the way it used to. Others aren’t managing at all, and things feel like they’re falling apart around them.
Either way, you’ve stopped expecting more than just getting through it.
Maybe it’s overwhelming anxiety before an exam. Maybe it’s a mind that won’t focus no matter how hard you try. Maybe it’s the quiet sense that you’re supposed to have life figured out by now and you don’t. Therapy is a legitimate place to work through any of that, not just the worst moments, the ones in between too.
I’m Dave te Sligte, a Registered Psychotherapist based in Peterborough, close to both Trent University and Fleming College, with online sessions available anywhere in Ontario.
Youth & High School Students
For youth (age 12 and up) who are navigating school, friends and the pressures of growing up in a confusing and sometimes scary world.
Students & Young Adults
For university and college students, and any young adult navigating anxiety, ADHD, academic life or just trying to “adult”.
Adults
For adults looking for a practical, skills-based approach to anxiety, controlling emotions and lasting change.
My approach centres on CBT and DBT, practical tools for managing emotions and understanding thought patterns. I also draw on Stoic philosophy, which is the actual foundation CBT was built on. The core idea is simple. Get clear on what’s in your control, and stop spending energy on what isn’t. That shift alone changes a lot.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent 20 years working directly with youth and young adults in mentoring and leadership development. That experience shapes how I work today. I understand this stage of life, not just clinically, but practically.
Therapy is a second career for me. I worked with youth and young adults in leadership development, mentoring and building positive community for 20 years. After receiving my MDiv and RP, I ventured into counselling in addiction centres and private practice.
